Commemoration events dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Sumgait Pogroms were held in Sofia

27 February, 2023

26 February 2023 Ambassador Armen Yedigarian, representatives of Armenian Diaspora and Bulgarian society, as well as Bulgarian public and political figures paid tribute to the memory of the innocent victims of Sumgait Pogroms and laid flowers at the Armenian Khachkar (Cross-stone) in the Yerevan park.

In his speech at the ceremony Ambassador Armen Yedigarian noted that the Sumgait Pogroms, by their very nature, revived the dark and bloody ghost of the genocide that took place at the beginning of the same century, in our still unhealed system of national identity and perceptions, and it is regrettable to note that this crime against humanity remained unpunished, no political assessment was given to it.

Ambassador Yedigarian emphasized that Armenophobia continues to be part of Azerbaijani state policy. It should be condemned and immediately ceased, as it is the only way that can enable establishment of lasting peace and stability in the region.

On the same day a remembrance liturgy was held at the St.Mary Armenian Church of Sofia.
